Goal Ball Festival

On Thursday 5 boys represented the school in the new sport of Goal Ball. The sport was initially devised  for visually impaired children and has been adapted for all children through the wearing of blindfolds. Children played in teams of 3, listening to the bells in the ball, communicating with each other and learning how to roll the ball over the gaol line to score-not easy.
Our team before the start...not too sure  about the new game...but put their names forward to play.

Listening to Inspire+ young leaders explaining rules

Eyes covered...

                                                                      ball ready
the boys soon found that by lying down they made it harder for the opposition to get the ball rolled past them

rolling for a goal keeping the roll straight aiming therefore for the opposition gaol

listening for the ball, moving to stop the ball

good defending boys

young leaders guiding and helping

another chance for a goal

getting ready to stop another goal attempt

well done boys , you learnt as you went on and adapted your tactics.

Boccia and New Age Kurling Festival

7 children took part in a new festival at the new King's School sports hall learning and playing Boccia and New Age Kurling ( unfortunately 1 person was ill so the girls team had to double up  at times).
Our 2 teams- a little bit apprehensive as no one is quite sure exactly how to play either game!

Boccia is played sitting down. From the chairs a jack is thrown, teams take it in turn aiming at the jack. If the red ball is closest then it is blue to go next. This continues until all 6 balls are thrown. Points are awarded to the team closest to the jack- if 2 of our red ball are closest, we score 2 points. Each game consisted of 3 legs.

Collecting our red balls ready for the next leg of the match.

The girls wating for their first match.

Snack time between matches!

Next for the Kurling-the stones had 4 ball bearing wheels that glided across the floor towards the target. Not easy- just how much force was needed and how to propel the stones proved tricky at first. Each match consisted of 6 legs alternating between ends.

The boys red end zone, 3 scoring stones.

Girls taking aim.

Technique has now been refined and all know just how to move the stones to get points on the scoring zone.

Tyler soon found out that he had a knack of moving opposition stones and so he held back and threw his stone last- a tactic that proved very successful.

Keen to collect the stones ready for the next leg.

At the end waiting for the final presentations.

Back at school the certificates were presented.

Results:
The boys team:
Boccia:
match 1: 2-3 ,match 2: 2-4,match 3: 10-0 A good final game!
Kurling:
 match1: 4-2, match2:  3-2( we are good at Kurling!)
Girls team
Boccia:
match 1:6-0, match 2: 7-0, match 3 2-3, match 4 :5-4
Kurling:
match1:4-0, match 2:0-2,match 3:7-0( we are good at both!)

Squash Club

KS2 are learning squash with coach Colin Gibson. Lots of children were interested in joining this new club and after Colin came  out to look at our hall, we decided that we could safely accommodate 2 rebound nets and 25 children .
The first session involved learning the importance of correct racket grip and how to hold it.

Walk to the throw down spot whilst balancing ball on racket, touch spot, walk to wall, touch and return all without dropping the ball. If ball dropped= 1 star jump to be completed!
Next starting on skills:drop, bounce and hit the ball above red line on the rebound net.

Starting to learn how to do a forehand hit.

How to hold racket, where leg points, which way to face if left handed or right, all before you actually drop and hit the ball!

Now time for the backhand ...

Good to see older children supporting the younger ones and giving a helping hand.

Lots learnt in 1 lesson- lets hope we remember it all for next week!

Gym presentation to the school

Following the success of the gym club at their recent gym competition, the children together with Mrs James their coach, talked to the school and children showed a few things that helped win their medals and trophy.

Fantastic work gym club. Thank you Mrs James for coaching and entering the children in the competition.
